Brilliant, just what I was looking for. I have a blog imported from Tumblr, consisting of Twitter-length posts which I do not want to burden with titles (SEO is obviously not a conern). But I do want to improve navigation with the use of certain other plugins, all of which want to display a title field, such as widgets showing posts from the same dayte, and YARPP. Problem solved. Thank you.

Partly based on your plugin I made a little script which runs through the database and updates the fields. After that your plugin is uhm... not needed any more.

Am I allowed to reference your plugin code in my script?

Unfortunately, the only way I can think of fixing the URLs would be to edit it manually. It might be possible to setup some magic mod_rewrite rule and php code to map between a mangled title and the URL, but I haven't tried.

Thanks for this plugin. You are right, it is simple and effective and has solved a huge problem for me. The titles and are now correct, but the post still has the numerical id in the url

(e.g. http://.../2005/09/30/112805641143511905/)

Do you know how to change that?
